Today’s featured balloon artist is Prub Bassi owner of Ballooned Creations. I am so excited to feature Prub, as, like me, she has a medical background but has gone on to use her creative talents to grow her own business

Tell me a little about you and your business.


I’m from Calgary, AB, Canada. I’ve been married for 16 years and have two children. I started off with a background in business management and then veered off into the world of science and became a Lab Technician in Microbiology. In all those years I always tried new things and often thought I had the spirit of an entrepreneur with creativity within me. After becoming a stay at home mom for many years, I finally decided to start a business and go after my dreams. Initially, the idea was to open up a wedding décor business and from there it went to candy bar tables and ended up becoming personalized balloon bouquets and balloon décor. I had been watching videos on balloon décor and looking at all the amazing designs with balloons on Instagram and that’s what intrigued me to go into the world of balloons. I saw that in Vancouver and Toronto the balloon industry was really picking up and thought why not try it here in Calgary. It was a business I could put my creativity into and introduce new designs that would be unique. Ballooned Creations is an at-home business where I create personalized balloon bouquets and balloon décor for various celebrations. We’ve done everything from at-home birthday parties to grand celebrations in various venues. Our hope is to keep bringing joy to our clients with our balloons.

What made you decide to start a balloon business?

I always knew that when I opened up a business it would have to allow me to be creative and have some sort of a design aspect to it. While doing research on various businesses the balloon industry was one where you could do all sorts of things with design. From elaborate balloon walls to the most beautiful balloon garlands. Every time I saw a new video I would want to try it myself. It gave me so much joy in creating the piece. I pride myself in being a self-taught balloon stylist. I have taken seminars with Qualatex and continue to expand my knowledge with online courses. There is always something new you can learn from the experts in the industry.

What do you love about running your business?

The best part about having your own business is that you have flexibility with your time. Being able to work from home allows for me to balance both my work and my personal life.

What has been a tough challenge for you and how are you overcoming it?

One of the toughest challenges has been trying to accommodate customers who have a specific budget. Sometimes what the client wants won’t work with the amount they are willing to pay. I am honest with my clientele and tell them the value, time, and amount of work it takes for certain setups. I only use high-quality balloons so that has to be taken into consideration as well. You have to be upfront with your prices and be firm as you are running a business. I try to accommodate all budgets, however, sometimes you can’t and that’s ok.

Prub uses the highest quality balloons and understands her value when it comes to pricing her work.

What piece of advice would you give to yourself if you were starting out all over again?

The advice I would have given myself is to believe in yourself and trust your instincts. It took me years to build up the confidence and realize my own potential before I finally decided to open up my business. The passion and creativity was always a part of me, however, the self-doubt and fear kept me from doing it sooner. You often hear of the analogy that on the other side of fear lies success. I am a firm believer in facing your fears. If you don’t believe in yourself and your abilities no one else will either.

What are your best sellers:

My best sellers are the personalized Deco Bubble Balloons. Being able to write a special message on the balloon to a loved one intrigues the customers. The joy it brings to the recipient makes the gift extra special. Upon delivery, the smiles and tears of joy are why I do what I do. Everyone deserves to feel loved and my balloons give it that personal touch.

What is the best investment you have made in your business?

The best investment I have made in my business is purchasing my Cricut Machine. I’m able to print off messages and designs for my balloons to personalize them for my customers. 

What is your favourite moment in your balloon business journey?

The best moment I have had in my business is when a wonderful doctor ordered balloons for the baby she had delivered a year ago. The mother had lost a baby prior to this child and the doctor had been a huge part of their lives giving the family hope and strength during their difficult journey. Delivering those balloons brought tears to my eyes. We have so many amazing people in this world who don’t get enough credit for the work that they do. It’s the little things in life that have so much meaning. Being able to be a part of that special gift for the baby meant so much to me. They were just balloons but the meaning behind them was so much more!
